Here is a collection of terms and names that will be frequently used. Reading through these should grant a broad understanding of the most important elements in the story universe.
Alpha Serum: A serum invented during World War 2 to create super soldiers.
Omega Serum: A serum the Proteans used to make superhuman warriors. These supermen can fly, are nigh invulnerable, and can manipulate energy. Earth scientists attempted to replicate this serum largely unsuccessfully in a secret government program called the Omega Project.
Proteans: (Kryptonians) A race of humans brought to another planet who’s society eventually reached incredible technological heights particularly in the area of genetic engineering and nanotechnology. They created the Omega Serum and used Omega modified soldiers to conquer most of civilized space over a thousand year campaign. When eventually defeated they negotiated a surrender whereby they were allowed to remain on their planet peaceably but had to disarm and withdraw any extra-planetary forces. After disarming their home planet was largely destroyed in a surprise attack by the alien warlord Kragan.
Peakskill Incident: The Peakskill Plant was a nuclear power plant that hid a government research facility that was working on both the Alpha and Omega serum projects. A meltdown at the plant resulted in the release of radiation and unsafe materials into nearby areas and riverbodies including New York city. There were few initial fatalities and a wave of miscarriages in those areas soon after. Some of the successful births from the area would develop abilities reminiscent of those sought after in the Omega Project.
Metahuman: Any human that exhibits capabilities that would be impossible for an unaltered normal human being.
New Meta: Any Metahuman that was born after the Peakskill incident who’s capabilities result from that event. They face considerable public fear and focus in equal measure.
Super-Soldier: Any Metahuman that has been modified by the Alpha Serum. Sometime’s simply called “Alpha’s” themselves colloquially.
Threat Level: Metahuman threat levels are measured in 4 rankings, Alpha, Gamma, Omega, and Zeta in ascending power.
Alpha (Threat Level): Alpha threats are of the approximate threat level of a Super-Soldier. A threat that is likely outside the range of local police or guard forces ability to handle.
Gamma (Threat Level): Gamma threats are requiring military intervention to put down. A Gamma threat is one that can be handled by directed military effort but will require some collateral damage to control.
Omega (Threat Level): A threat outside the range of military effort to control without the use of mass forces. Putting down an Omega level threat would be an uncertain proposition and would require considerable collateral damage if successful. Omega threats likely require a response by other Metahuman aggressors.
Zeta (Threat Level): A threat level of planet wide importance. A Zeta level threat is a plausible threat to every nation on earth simultaneously.
Zeta (Species): The ancient Alien species now known as Zeta’s were named simultaneously to the threat level as something more powerful than an Omega level metahuman had not been imagined before their discovery. Zeta’s exist as physical creatures but their power is in their massive psychic abilities allowing them near total control of their environment. Their telepathic powers allow them to appear as whatever they desire and communicate across language barriers.
Atlanteans: The group of 6 Zeta’s that has existed on earth for approximately the last 10,000 years in a massive ship deep in the Atlantic ocean. On the occasions they required to interact with human beings they have usually posed as the gods of various human cultures which best allowed them to gain whatever they temporarily required.
Chosen: A human individual chosen by the Zeta’s to act as an emissary and ambassador to the human race as well as a soldier should the Zeta’s deem human affairs requiring influence.
Artifact: A Zeta device. Some Zeta tools or weapons are objects of considerable power that combine their advanced technological level and psychic prowess. These objects are of immense value in the rare instances they come into non Zeta hands.
Hypercognitive: Any human with an IQ exceeding 200.
Psychic/Psionic: Interchangeable terms describing the ability to manipulate ones environment purely through the power of focused thought.
Juice: A highly illegal synthetic steroid that grants it’s users massive strength gains in short term boosts. The drugs have addictive and eventually debilitating long term effects but their use has become commonplace in the criminal underworld and has cropped up in professional sports. Users are called “Juicers”.
The Commision on Superhuman Activities: The CSA is the American government’s task keeping force on any metahuman activities that may be considered a threat to the United States. They have investigative committees and the capacity to mobilize military force to combat percieved threats. They also maintain their own team of Metahuman agents collectively called the Aggressors.
Guardians of the Galaxy: (Green Lanterns) The Guardians are keepers of peace throughout the galaxy. Founded on the home planet of the Zeta’s their goal is to maintain order across the many species in the galaxy as well as to defend the Zeta home planet. Most inhabited planets have a single Guardian assigned to their protection and in times of great danger multiple Guardians will convert on the same threat.
The Aggressors: A group of Metahumans working directly for the American military. They advance America’s overt or covert goals and they do not question orders.
The Champions Alliance:(The Justice League) An organization founded by Vanguard as a coalition of the most powerful hero’s on earth under a single roof pledged to defend the planet from world endangering threats.
Body Shoppe: Black Market surgery laboratories around the world where body modifications are performed. The labs transform their payers into combat machines if they can live through the grisly operations. They sprung up as copycats began to market the Fleshcrafter’s advancements in bio-mechanical and genetic engineering.
